Running Mothership via Foundry I wanted some unique assets that I could use to run the game the way I wanted and convey the tone of the world. I'm running a very classic Alien-like vibe.

Here are my world anchors:

  • Analog electronics. Everything is big, flickering CRT screens with neon colored vector graphics. Pipes, tubes and wires. Blinking lights, buttons you can push, buttons that light up.
  • Plutocracy - the galaxy is run by corporations at war with one another.
  • Layers of History - Humans and other species have ventured through space, spreading their creations to distant stars. Wrecks, abandoned stations, the remains of intelligent and feral beings are found when you least expect them.
  • Dark Space - Waiting in the darkness of space is opportunity for great wealth, and unimaginable horror.

I wanted to illustrate the locations in the module Another Bug Hunt like I would a dungeon. The rooms are abstract, only there to give players an understanding of the spatial relationships of rooms without having to think too much about it. What happens within is left to the imagination. While playing, the graphics inside the walls are hidden. When the players arrive in a new room, I animate the symbols in with a flicker and some bleepy bloop sound effects.

For the pre-mission sequence, I created this simple graphic to illustrate the environment they were entering. Mostly acting as a cool backdrop for roleplay on the ship before the mission began.
